Abstract
This chapter provides linguistic, historical, social, and cultural background information about South Africa relevant for neuropsychological assessments. An illustrative case study is provided of the neuropsychological assessment of a teenager who suffered a brain injury and who underwent surgery as a result of epilepsy when he was a young child. The case study highlights how neuropsychological tests can be used in a culturally appropriate and responsive manner, and indicates the importance of considering a testee's linguistic, socio-economic, educational, and cultural background in order to conduct an assessment that is sensitive, fair, and valid. In addition, the case study is the basis for a set of lessons learned which consider how contextual factors related to culture, language, education, and access to resources may impact neuropsychological assessments.
