Abstract

The efforts of the release from nightmare, and seeking good dreams occupied the greater part of the cultural note on dreaming. Japanese culture has developed both defense techniques against nightmares, and techniques to have a good dream. As a defense technique, amulets and charms of Baku were introduced from China at first, and developed in Japan as a nightmare eater. Since then the amulet of Baku transformed into a picture of Takarabune (a treasure ship) which brought a good dream. Very recently, Malaysian dream theory and their intervention technique of transferring dream content toward the positive were introduced. In Japan, people have not developed the active control technique to create a favorite dream content. Whether or not the modern scientific dream study could develop a dream creating technique was discussed in relation to the experimental study of lucid dream and the dream theory based on the physiological study.
