Abstract

Heritage tourism destinations (HTDs) are facing the challenge of realizing innovative development based on cultural inheritance conservation, but little is known about this paradoxical phenomenon. It is necessary to scientifically understand and assess this phenomenon to devise an effective response. Therefore, this study develops the concept of cultural inheritance-based innovation (CIBI) and its measurement scale based on a paradoxical perspective. Study 1 extracts four dimensions of CIBI at HTDs through grounded theory, covering cultural authentic production, creative dissemination, living display and transforming creation. Study 2 rigorously develops a 13-item scale of CIBI with good reliability and validity. This study provides a measurement tool for evaluating the practical performance of CIBI at HTDs. Moreover, it enriches and expands the theoretical knowledge of cultural innovation at tourism destinations and promotes the discussion of the relationship between cultural innovation and sustainable development.
