Abstract

Immigration in Aotearoa New Zealand has been contributing to a culturally diverse and multicultural society, particularly through economic migration in rural towns. People can hold varying perspectives towards cultural difference which can lead to expressions of inclusion and exclusion within dance studio classes and the wider community. Through considering cultural inclusion and multiculturalism in New Zealand, this chapter: Explores theories of cultural inclusion which assists in understanding the dance teachers’ perspectives and responses to cultural difference. Discusses key concepts of cultural integration and multiculturalism. Examines acculturation as a useful framework for understanding social encounters and the ways dance teachers may interact with culturally diverse people through assimilation and integration. Introduces concepts of intercultural competence and intercultural sensitivities, in particular Bennett’s (1986) developmental model of intercultural sensitivities (DMIS).
