Abstract
AbstractHeritage conservation is vital for identifying, recording, analyzing, and protecting heritage and cultural resources. Heritage buildings are the most important evidence of past life. In Port Said, the government is heading to reviving heritage areas and buildings, realizing its important role in the preservation of the culture of the city as well as to generate an economic return and to support the tourism industry. This paper aims to provide a management model in line with governance and local ownership principle and derives clues as how to balance between developing the tourism industry while still conserving the physical integrity of sites, promoting and celebrating their educational, historic, and cultural values. There are various models and concepts developed in the scientific literature and Heritage Conservation Management (CHM) practice, the author focuses on applying these concepts and practices on the case study of The Italian House “Casa d’Italia” in Port-Said city through an analytical literature review and adaptive reuse proposal for the heritage building, by changing the function of the heritage building to new uses appropriate to the current needs for the city and its tourism. The results generate a model for how to properly manage cultural heritage and reuse heritage buildings in Port-Said city and how we deal with the opportunities and challenges in the city.KeywordsCultural heritage managementConservation and restorationAdaptive reuseHeritage tourism
