Abstract
Recent studies have observed disparities on cultural continuity between home and school as predictors of students' motivation. This chapter illustrates the results of such studies and the implications of a recent descriptive study on that subject for culturally based, educationally relevant values and behaviors. It focuses on how the values and norms present in the culture of school are consistent or inconsistent with the values and norms present in the child's home culture and whether continuity in cultural values creates a distinctive role for student motivation. It also explains the areas of continuity between home and school cultures that are most relevant in the relationship between family and teacher and students' motivational outcomes.
