Abstract

Sydney rock oysters were grown on continuously submerged trays within estuarine ponds stocked with school prawns ( Metapenaeus macleayi). The shell growth rates of these oysters were similar to those obtained on an intertidal lease. In 0.11 ha ponds stocked with oysters at a low density (1560 oysters per pond on three 1.7 m 2 trays), very high oyster condition index values were obtained and at a high density (38 200 oysters per pond on fifty 2.5 m 2 trays), oysters containing meats that were in very poor condition when stocked rapidly reached marketable condition. Oyster mortality was, however, a serious problem in one trial. The ponds showed promise as spat collection sites and also produced excellent broodstock for artificial, oyster larval rearing trials.
