Abstract

Research on the preservation and conservation of wild, medicinal plants in natural habitats has been used to select species for collections (ex situ and in situ) and cultivation. After 2 years study, the species could be grouped as those selections being widely distributed with adequate population size and suitable for in situ conservation (such as Clinopodium vulgare, Origanum vulgare, and Leonurus cardiaca), those selections of limited distribution suitable for ex situ collections and requiring preservation of seeds in a gene bank (such as Adonis veranlis, Centaurium erythraeae, and Helichrysum arenarium), and those selections that are rare, valuable, and disappearing, but with the possibility for in vitro propagation and conservation (such as Glycyrrhiza glabra, and Sideritis scardica). Not all valuable and rare species could be successfully cultivated, suggesting a need for efforts directed towards the creation in situ conservation projects of wild species in Bulgaria.
