Abstract

Cultivation of Chlorella DPK-01 (Indonesia's indigenous microalgae from Depok, West Java) using audible sound (music) was done. The aim of this study was to know the effect of audible sound (music) in photobioreactor (PBR) system to the growth of Chlorella DPK-01 in order to gain the biomass production of Chlorella DPK-01 by improving PBR system. The PBRs with label A1, A2, B1, and B2 were exposed to music while the Control PBR was not exposed to any sound. Music called “Blues for Elle” (BFE) was exposed to PBR A1 and A2 while music called “Far and Wide” (FAW) was exposed to PBR B1 and B2. At the end of the observation period (10 days), the growth rate and doubling time of Chlorella DPK-01 that was exposed to BFE in shorter distance from the source of sound is higher than Chlorella DPK-01 that was exposed to BFE in longer distance from the source of sound, exposed to FAW, and not exposed to any sound (r value=0.239 per day, k value=0.345 per day). Therefore, audible sound (music) with certain frequency and the right method of exposure in a proper system may increase the growth of Chlorella DPK-01.
