Abstract

Cult centralization as a device of cult control that it be rectified for the purpose of serving the king's interest. How is this statement, made by Onias in his letter to Ptolemy and Queen Cleopatra in Josephus, Am 13.65–68, to be distinguished from Deut 12,8: “that you shall not do as we do here today, every man whatever is right in his own eyes"? A discussion of Josephus’ ambivalence towards the Jewish temple in Helio‐polis, juxtaposed to his treatment of the “similar” Jewish/Samaritan temple on Garizim, suggests a new understanding of Heliopolis’ role in Josephus’ writings.
