Abstract

ABSTRACT The authors present examples of questions and answers arising from a “hands-on” and exploratory approach to discrete mathematics using cuisenaire rods. Cuisenaire rod trains are formed by placing the rods end to end. Combinatorial questions about these trains provide the setting for discovering numerical patterns by experimentation and organizing the results with the techniques of induction and successive differences.
