Abstract
The aim of this qualitative study was to investigate the significance attributed to oral health care by a group of caregivers of elderly people. Thirty-three caregivers participated in the study. The data were collected through the presentation of a question that was answered in writing and analyzed through the content analysis method. Four groups of meanings interrelated with oral health care emerged: oral health as a factor of health; as a sociability element; as a symbol of corporal hygiene; and the qualification and determination of oral health importance. For the participants the meaning of oral health provided to the elderly is related to general preventive aspects and to subjective elements of life in society; thus, evidencing the inseparable vision between oral and general health. Oral health care was considered important in the context of life and health conditions of elderly people.

RESUMO Muitos idosos recebem cuidados de pessoal capacitado no ambiente familiar, em instituições de longa permanência ou em hospitais, incluindo os relativos à saúde bucal. O objetivo deste estudo qualitativo foi investigar o significado atribuído ao cuidado à saúde bucal por um grupo de cuidadores de idosos. Os dados foram coletados por meio da apresentação da questão O que significa para você o cuidado à saúde bucal da pessoa idosa?, respondida por escrito, e analisados pelo método da análise de conteúdo. Outros estudos revelam que os conhecimentos dos cuidadores sobre o cuidado à saúde bucal da pessoa idosa são variáveis(14-15). Definiu-se como indicador a freqüência com que foram mencionadas as expressões temáticas representativas dos significados do cuidado à saúde bucal para os participantes. Foram realizadas inferências e interpretações sobre os dados já tratados, analisando-se qualitativamente os temas e categorias que constituíram o significado do cuidado à saúde bucal para os participantes, bem como suas inter-relações
