Abstract

Two new disulfated triterpene glycosides, cucumariosides F1 and F2, have been isolated from the sea cucumber Eupentacta fraudatrix and their structures elucidated by NMR spectroscopy, mass-spectrometry and chemical transformations. These glycosides were also identified using LC-ESI MS/MS in the starfish Patiria pectinifera, which preys on E. fraudatrix in aquaria. This indicates that toxic triterpene glycosides may be used as food markers in some predatory starfish.
