Abstract

The economic crisis in the Soviet Union and the collapse of Communist-controlled regimes in Eastern Europe have left Cuba in a dangerously exposed position. The hostility of the United States—and to a lesser extent of other advanced capitalist countries—toward revolutionary Cuba forced that country to become heavily dependent for trade and aid on the Soviet Union and its Eastern European allies. Now that this relationship is weakening and may even be altogether cut off, the future of Cuba can at best be described as full of difficulties and uncertainties. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.
