Abstract

The reaction of Cu(NO3)2·5/2H2O with p-cyanophenoxyacetic acid (p-CPAH) and NaN3 produces an infinite 2D network [Cu(N3)(p-CPA)]n. Topologically the 2D network is a new binodal (3,5)-net with Schlafli symbol: (3.4.5)(32.4.5.62.74). The Cu(II) centres are one dimensionally linked by end-on azide and syn–syncarboxylate bridges mediating strong ferromagnetic coupling along the infinite 1D chain, in addition that weak antiferromagnetic interactions exist between the chains. The 2D magnetic network exhibits spin reorientation at low temperatures which has been confirmed from heat capacity measurements.
