Abstract

sionals (28%) compared with non-health care professionals (6.5%), in subjects with more than the mean years of education (30%) compared with less than the mean (69%) and in those who abused either alcohol (29%) or drugs (36%) alone compared with those who abused both alcohol and other drugs (71%). These differences were all significant at the 0.05 level. This study suggests that there is a high rate of psychiatric co-morbidity in patients seen in private substance dependency treatment centers but less than in VA or public hospitals. These findings indicate the need for psychiatric screening as a standard part of the evaluation of patients in private drug and alcohol treatment centers.
