Abstract

In my doctoral research, I focus on the visual world of performances and the work of scenographers, but since the director’s concept and the scenographer’s work seem to be inseparable, I needed to approach the topic from the perspective of the act of directing. That’s why I analyze in my research the collaborative productions of Silviu Purcărete as a director with scenographers Helmut Stürmer and Dragoș Buhagiar – like “The Cherry Orchard” produced by the Budapest National Theatre in 2019. It has also proven beneficial to examine the visual world of the scenographers in productions with other directors too, because it provides a broader understanding of their work, independent of the directorial concept and extends the research beyond a single creative process. In this case the analysis of their joint production of “The Cherry Orchard” was accompanied by the iconic 1998 performance by Vlad Mugur, whose memorable space was designed by Stürmer, and the analysis of the latest performance by Yuri Kordonsky in 2021, whose stage design praises Buhagiar’s work. These three performances and the analysis of their visual world form the basis of this study.
