Abstract

RECENTLY several authors have described the growth of polymer crystals from solution1–5. These crystals are lamellar in structure, and it has been established that the chain molecules are oriented perpendicular to the plane of the layers. Since the average chain-length considerably exceeds the thickness of the lamellae, it has been proposed that the chain molecules must be sharply folded in the crystals3. In comparison with the synthetic polymers on which these observations have been made, cellulose molecules are known to be relatively inflexible and should therefore be an interesting system for similar studies. This communication gives a brief preliminary account of the growth of crystals of cellulose triacetate and their conversion to crystals of cellulose.
