Abstract

The vibrational properties of polycrystalline rare earth digermanates of general formula, Ln 2Ge 2O 7 (LnGdLu, Y) have been investigated by means of Raman and IR spectroscopy. Mean amplitudes of vibration for the terminal GeO 3 groups of the Ge 2O 7 6− ion and force constants for the Ge 2O 7 6− digermanate group have been calculated. The magnetic behaviour of the digermanates has also been studied via magnetic susceptibility measurements in the 4.2–300 K temperature range.
