Abstract

We report on crystal and magnetic structures of the UTSi compounds (T = transition metal) studied by X-ray and neutron diffraction. They crystallize in the orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure except for UPtSi (CeCu 2-type). We have resolved magnetic structures of URhSi (ferromagnetic with strongly reduced U moments), UPtSi (incommensurate, collinear AF structure) and UPdSi at low temperatures. UIrSi is not ordered down to 1.3 K. Our findings are consistent with results of bulk measurements. The development of 5f-magnetism in the UTSi series can be conceived in the framework of the 5f-ligand hybridization involvement in the formation of U moments.
