Abstract

Crystallization phenomena were studied in the synthesis of ZSM-5 using relatively high (Me 2/ n ) 2 O/(TPA) 2 O ratios (12/4.5) in the starting batch composition, as this compositional reactant region has not been investigated previously. A typical starting mole ratio composition was 12Na 2 O-4.5(TPA) 2 O-Al 2 O 3 -90SiO 2 -2000H 2 O run at temperatures 140°–170°C usually up to 60 h. Crystallization curves were developed from XRD data in the Na 2 O, K 2 O, Li 2 O, BaO and SrO systems and apparent activation energies of nucleation and crystallization calculated from Arrhenius plots in the alkali metal systems. Generally, spherulitic aggregates 1–7 μ m were obtained, but some crystal growth up to 30 μ m was followed by scanning electron microscopy. The effects of using different silica and TPA sources were determined.
