Abstract

The reaction center of Photosystem II (RCII) is the large multi-subunit membrane protein-pigment complex which the site of the primary photochemical reactions of oxygenic photosynthesis. These reactions include charge separation, sequential electron transfer and oxygen evolution (1,2). While many similarities have been proposed to exist between RCII and bacterial reaction centers (3–5), the lack of a three-dimensional structure of RCII has hindered our progress in the understanding of the mechanisms of RCII reactions.
