Abstract

A new metastable ternary intermetallic phase having a hexagonal crystal structure, with a=0.858±0.017 nm and c=0.924±0.018 nm, has been identified in the Al–Ni–Y alloy system. This metastable phase was observed to form via a polymorphic crystallisation process from the amorphous phase in an Al 75Ni 21Y 4 alloy melt-spun ribbon, in competition with a fully coupled transformation product consisting of the equilibrium phases Al 3Ni and Al 16Ni 3Y.
