Abstract

The preparation of two crystalline cerium(IV) phosphates that are isomorphous with the previous reported compound CePA is described. The preparations have a variable ammonium ion content and this accounts for the differences observed in their ion exchange behavior. Characterization indicates that these phases belong to a family whose idealized general formula is Ce(OH) 1.5(NH 4HPO 4) x (H 2PO 4) 1− x (PO 4) 0.5·0.5H 2O. The selectivity of these compounds towards alkali metal cations was determined and the results indicate a small pore zeolitic type structure for these compounds.
