Abstract

Complexes of praseodymium nitrate with urea (Ur) can serve as precursors in solution combustion synthesis of nanoscale oxides. Two compounds, [Pr(Ur)2(H2O)2(NO3)3] and [Pr(Ur)4(NO3)3], were isolated and their crystal structures were studied. Combustion of congruently soluble [Pr(Ur)4(NO3)3] begins at ~330 °C and finishes at ~400 °C producing basic carbonate. For preparing Pr6O11 and Pr2O3, further annealing at higher temperature (>460 °C and >770 °C, respectively) is necessary.
