Abstract

Portions of the Hf-Pd phase diagram have been reinvestigated in an attempt to resolve contradictions that occur between two previous studies. Techniques employed include Rietveld refinement using x-ray and high-temperature neutron diffraction data to determine crystal structures and phase equilibria. The compound Hf2Pd3 was discovered with the Os2Al3 structure type, and no evidence was found for a reported “Hf3Pd4” phase. More importantly, the compound HfPd2 was found to be involved in a previously undetected peritectic reaction at 1850 °C. Crystallographic data are given for all compounds encountered, and a significantly revised phase diagram is proposed.
