Abstract

The crystal structure of Bi7Ti4NbO21 has been solved by X-ray and neutron diffraction data analysis on single crystals. Bi7Ti4NbO21 crystallizes with orthorhombic symmetry, I2cm space group with a=5.4420(10) Å, b=5.4040(10) Å, c=57.990(12) Å and Z=2. The structure can be regarded as a mixed Aurivillius phase resulting of a regular intergrowth along the c-axis of one half the unit cell of Bi4Ti3O12 and one half the unit cell of Bi3TiNbO9 parent Aurivillius phases by sharing ‘Bi2O2’ common sheets. Perovskite-like slabs with BiTiNbO7 and Bi2Ti3O10 compositions are distorted in a way close to that observed in Bi3TiNbO9 and Bi4Ti3O12 ones respectively.
