Abstract
The AB2 type Laves phases hydrogen absorbing alloys are being investigated as “second generation materials” for Ni-hydrogen rechargeable batteries. The variation of crystal structure with substitution to the Zr site of ZrM2 (M2 = V0.5Ni1.1Mn0.2Fe0.2) by Ti, Hf and Nb has been studied. The Laves phases C14 and C15 coexist for all alloys except TiM2 (BCC), Zr0.25Ti0.75M2 (74% C14 and 26% BCC) . The alloys Zr0.5Ti0.5M2 and NbM2 are pure C14. The amount of the C15 phase decreases with increasing substitution. When the C15 phase reaches a lattice parameter of a = 6.965 å, this phase ceases to exist. The phase stability under annealing and hydriding is confirmed.
