Abstract

The role of surfactant adsorption in the preparation of high basicity oil sols of CaCO 3 was investigated using a radiotracer technique. The specific adsorption of Ca 45 alkylaryl sulfonate (∼1000 G.M.W.) on the CaCO 3 vaterite structure was found to exceed that on the calcite structure by an order of magnitude. It is concluded that the formation of stable concentrated oil sols of CaCO 3 is facilitated under conditions favoring vaterite formation.
