Abstract
New vibrational assignments are proposed for maleic and succinic anhydrides and their deuteroderivatives, based on the band dichroism of the crystal spectra in polarized light. Our present assignments, tested by an accurate normal-coordinate analysis, differ slightly from those obtained previously 1,2, the most relevant discrepancies being confined to the region between 1200 and 1300 cm −1. The force fields obtained include strong interaction terms for the OC-O-CO group, which are responsible for the occurrence of the in-phase CO stretching vibration at a higher frequency than the corresponding out-of- phase mode.
