Abstract

Undercooling experiments on Co–Pd melts have shown that the nucleation behaviour of these melts is influenced by the onset of magnetic ordering, as the temperature of the liquid approaches the Curie temperature. These experimental findings on the maximum undercoolability of Co–Pd melts can be described, if the classical nucleation model is extended by a magnetic contribution to the Gibbs free energy difference between the liquid and solid phase.
