Abstract

A new method of hydrothermal growth of zircon on natural and synthetic seeds is proposed. The reaction mixture is made of Zr(SO 4) 2·4H 2O+SiO 2 gel. The mixture is raised to a temperature above 750°C under a pressure between (0.5 and 1.0)×10 8 Pa. Synthetic crystals are obtained from seeds of about 100 to 200 μm, which can reach 700 μm in size. The overgrowths obtained show the form {101} well developed, and sometimes the faces {001} not much developed disregarding of the forms already present on the original seed. The as-grown faces obtained are generally of a very good quality. The interface between the seed and the overgrowth is well defined.
