Abstract

Yttrium iron garnet and mixed rare earth iron garnet crystals have been grown by chlorine vapor transport in closed tubes. A thermodynamic analysis is developed to determine the conditions for successful vapor growth of garnets. It was found that garnet crystals could be grown only in a narrow range of temperature and chlorine pressure. Calculations of the partial pressures of gases involved in the transport process show that iron appears in the vapor phase predominantly as FeCl 2.
