Abstract

The cuprous chloride (γ-CuCl) crystal exhibits wide optical transmittance and electro-optic property with Pockels effect, which shows a great potential application in the infrared band. In this paper, a large transparent γ-CuCl crystal with Φ22 mm × 35 mm has been grown by the vertical Bridgman method without flux for the first time. The crystal was further characterized by the X-ray diffraction of the powder measurement, thermal analysis, optical and electric properties. The results indicate that γ-CuCl crystal crystallize in the F4¯3m space group of the cubic system and wide direct band gap (Eg = 3.1 eV). The effective electro-optic coefficient is 2.91 pm/V at 60 Hz.
