Abstract

The Czochralski pulling technique was used to study the crystal growth of lithium metasilicate, a potential piezoelectric and electrooptic material of the A2BO3 type compounds. Crystalline Li2SiO3 has an orthorhombic unit cell with space group Cmc21 and (Si2O6)∞ chains oriented parallel to the piezoelectric c-axis. Li2SiO3 melts congruently at 1201°C, but is highly viscous in the molten state which causes difficulties when growing large single crystal boules by pulling. In spite of difficulties with cracking in planes parallel to the chain direction, crystals of good optical quality with areas up to 5 mm × 5 mm normal to c have been grown. Growth parameters and characterization of these Li2SiO3 crystals are discussed.
