Abstract

Calcium tartrate tetrahydrate (CTT) single crystals doped with barium were grown by controlled diffusion in silica gel at ambient temperature. The maximum uptake of barium in CTT was determined. Effect of barium dopant on the growth and morphology of CTT was studied. The grown crystals were characterized by chemical analysis, thermoanalytical techniques, X-ray diffraction and optical studies. Barium-doped CTT crystallizes in the monoclinic system. The crystals are optically biaxial and exhibit second harmonic signals greater than quartz.
