Abstract

A rigorous crystal field (CF) calculation was adopted for the first time to analyse consistently the observed experimental results of average magnetic susceptibility and Mössbauer spectra of Yb 2Ti 2O 7, thereby resolving the previous discrepancy in determining the values of the CF parameters by earlier workers. The values of the CF parameters were found to be A 20=420.0, A 40=440.0, A 60=−280.0, A 43=500.0, A 63=−150, A 66=−150 (all in cm −1). The saturated magnetization M sat and g-values were calculated and found to be respectively M sat=2.48×10 5 A/m, g ‖=3.428 and g ⊥=0.0. The quadrupolar interactions at different temperatures were determined for 170Yb in the titanate host and found to be in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Other nuclear hyperfine quantities were also calculated for the first time.
