Abstract

AbstractThe general form of the spin Hamiltonian for the (001), (111), and (110) surfaces of cubic crystals is derived on the basis of symmetry requirements. The resulting angular dependence of the spin‐wave spectrum is considered. For rare‐earth ions, the surface anisotropy is shown to be related with the crystal field parameters.
