Abstract

Neutron inelastic scattering experiments have been performed to measure the crystal-field splitting of the 5I8 ground state multiplet corresponding to the Ho3+ ion in HocY1-cAg compounds. The resulting crystal-field parameters turn out to be independent of the rare earth concentration. Additional information has been obtained on the strength of the molecular field. The parameters derived from the neutron experiments give an excellent description of the magnetic properties of HoAg.
