Abstract

Magnetic anisotropy and susceptibilities have been measured and used to locate the ground term crystal field (CF) levels of Ho 3+ in HoPO 4 single crystals. Comparison with the absorption spectra of Ho 3+ in YPO 4 shows that although the overall splitting is of the same order the pattern of the Stark levels differs appreciably in the two cases. The magnetic susceptibilities at different temperatures were obtained theoretically considering both the crystal field interaction and the dipolar and exchange effects in the mean field approximation. The CF energies were obtained in the ground term manifold including the effects of intermediate coupling. The g-values obtained are found to be in reasonable agreement with those derived from other sources. The thermal behavior of quadrupole splitting, electronic and hyperfine heat capacity is worked out and the principal anomalies predicted.
