Abstract
The authors derive for the first time an expression for the magnetic susceptibility ( chi ) of mixed valence systems in which crystal field effects have been included. They calculate chi as a function of temperature for different values of the crystal field splitting ( Delta ) and the hybridisation parameter ( Gamma ). They find that Gamma significantly affects chi in comparison to Delta and the crystal field effect is observable only when Gamma / Delta <<1.
