Abstract
The optical absorption and luminescence spectra of antiferromagnetic garnets with Cr 3+ ions in octahedral sites have been measured and interpreted using a crystal field model. Several sharp lines in emission and absorption have been attributed to exciton and exciton-magnon transitions. Exchange integrals have been determined from the observed spectra.
