Abstract

The full crystal field Hamiltonian for a rare earth ion in a cubic environment is applied to provide a detailed analysis or EPR of the Γ 8 (3) ground state quarter of Er 3+ in Pd single crystal. The experimentally observed splitting of two of the resonances allows determination of the crystal field strength W = − .158 K (±0.030). Previous analysis of this same data using an effective spin Hamiltonian for the Γ 8 (3) quarter could not account for the splitting.
