Abstract
This is the first in an occasional series of cryptography policy updates that will appear in Cryptologia as events warrant. Readers, especially those outside the United States, are invited to alert us to policy developments of interest. Our focus this issue is on implementation of the U. S. encryption policy changes announced by Vice President Gore in September 1998, and on related U. S. policy initiatives concerning encryption export and cryptography standards.
