Abstract
A cryostat is described which incorporates an electromagnet, inside the experimental chamber, for the accurately controlled imposition of small forces (less-than-or-eq, slant 001 N) on contacts. This is superior to externally loaded systems in that the necessity of using a force transmission shaft (together with flexible vacuum seals) has been avoided and the concomitant shaft heat leaks have been eliminated.
