Abstract
Cl −-ATPase activity resides in the basolateral membrane of gut cells. The sugar alcohols sorbitol, mannitol and glycerol could not maintain any cryoprotection of the basolateral membrane fraction for at least 12hr. The sugar, mannose, could not maintain any cryoprotection of basolateral membrane for at least 12 hr, while sucrose could only maintain 20% of basolateral membrane Cl −-ATPase activity after 12 hr. Trehalose cryoprotected basolateral membrane Cl −-ATPase activity by 98% of control up to 48 hr.
