Abstract

A compact, low-energy electron source for use at cryogenic temperatures is described. The device uses quartz optical fibers and a discharge lamp to excite photoelectrons from a cold zinc emitter. Picoampere currents are obtained with low heating. The source has been used in studies of surface-state electrons on liquid helium.
