Abstract

TYPE: Abstract TOPIC: Procedures PURPOSE: Diagnostic tools for peripheral nodule sampling have been standardized with brush, needle or forceps. The ability of the Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy to reach out to the lung periphery accurately opens up the possibility of using a 1.1mm cryoprobe for diagnostics. This is the first known case series describing results for cryobiopsy with Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy. METHODS: This case series includes 5 patients with ground glass nodules or semi-solid nodules. Robotic bronchoscopy was performed and sampling using brush, needle and forceps was done on all patients initially. Afterwards, at least 3 cryobiopsies were taken using 1.1mm cryoprobe through the robotic bronchoscopy catheter. The catheter was left in place with out needing to remove it after biopsy attemps. RESULTS: CONCLUSIONS: Use of cryobiopsy with robotic bronchoscopy in this small case series led to diagnostic results in all 5 cases compared to other sampling tools. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Using the 1.1mm cryoprobe with Ion robotic bronchoscopy is safe, effective and accurately diagnosis nodular lesions better than other sampling tools in this small case series. More data will be needed but cryobiopsy to obtain better tissue is safe and effective based on this case series. No damanage was done to the robotic catheter after each case.
