Abstract

Cryogenic atom probe tomography (cryo-APT) is an emerging microscopy technique that has already led to several new insights in materials science. However, some of the challenges regarding the particularly stringent sample fabrication and preparation for cryo-APT measurements have not yet been fully outlined. Here we discuss the recent advances in the development of cryo-APT, with a special focus on understanding the unique instrumentation and sample preparation techniques that will allow cryo-APT to be applied to a broad range of materials study. We highlight how cryo-APT holds enormous potential in revolutionising nanoscience across the physical, materials and life sciences disciplines.
