Abstract
Male adult Trichoplusia ni (Hubner), the cabbage looper, were bioassayed to determine the effect on pheromone responsiveness of 3 crowding conditions. Insects were crowded as larvae, as adults in holding cages prior to bioassay, or as adults in bioassay cages. To determine crowding effects on pheromone production, sex pheromone was extracted from adult female T. ni that had been reared at several densities as larvae or held at various densities following adult emergence. No significant effects (P ≤ 0.05) of the crowding conditions tested on pheromone responsiveness in males or on sex pheromone production by females were found.
